How I Met Your Mother vs Friends

I watched How I Met Your Mother for the first time when I was in 7th grade. At that time, the jokes most likely went right over my head and I probably didn’t understand the context to many things but still something about Ted Mosby resonated with me, even then. I have always struggled with keeping my love in check like him which has led to various failings throughout the years but Ted’s always had my back by being one step ahead. For these reasons and more, I whole-heartedly love the show.

On the other hand, I watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S. a couple years later and thought it was mostly nice. I’d all but forgotten about it until last year when, for some reason, everyone started talking about it. I, by no means, thought it was a bad show but I couldn’t fathom why everyone liked it so much. People started labelling it superior to HIMYM which didn’t sit well with me. So I decided to re-watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S to gain perspective which led me to the conclusion that I really didn’t like F.R.I.E.N.D.S all that much.

Over the past year, I’ve had this “which is the best” debate several time with many people. So I thought I'd just go ahead and set the record straight about why HIMYM is a much better show, once and for all.

Disclaimer: Readers’ discretion is advised. Also, SPOILER ALERT!

1. Non-linear Storytelling

The best part about HIMYM is definitely the fact that the storytelling is non-linear and unorthodox. It is a ride from start to finish whereas F.R.I.E.N.D.S just doesn’t compare in that department. It is way more nuanced with its story telling where even though you’re getting glimpse into the future, time and again, the mystery is still there. Compared to HIMYM, F.R.I.E.N.D.S is bland, one-directional and well, boring as hell.

2. Better Male Lead

Theodore Evelyn Mosby is a nerd like Ross but a lovable nerd and way better person than him. Ted is endearing, empathetic and the actual best at all things romantic. When the girl that he liked didn't have time for a date, he staged a 2-minute date comprising of dinner, movie, deserts and everything in between outside her office.  Need I say more?
Whereas Ross is extremely whiny and problematic across all seasons. I   don’t think I’ve ever watched an episode where Ross didn’t sulk for 80% of it. Not to miss that one time when he took Rachel’s name instead of Emily’s while taking their vows. Bottom line, Ross is the worst.

3. Nuanced Humor

One of the major reasons why I prefer HIMYM to F.R.I.E.N.D.S is because of its humor. Say what you want, but the humor in F.R.I.E.N.D.S is dumb with a capital D. The jokes are contrived, the one-liners are forced and the humorous punches more often than not fail to hit the mark.
On the contrary, HIMYM is elusive. The jokes are hidden in plain sight may it be through the background posters, scenes or the texts on the several websites mentioned (case in point tedmosbyisajerk.com, tedmosbyisnotajerk.comlorenzovonmatterhorn.com/). There is greater emphasis on details which makes it enjoyable even on the 4569th re-watch.

4. Unreliable Narrator

The whole premise of HIMYM is that Ted is telling his children the story of how he met their mother. Like any person who has ever told a story, he sometimes forgets or messes up a few parts. This adds so much substance to the show. Sometimes he forgets the name of the girl and calls her blah-blah, sometimes he messes up the timeline so he goes back and re-tells the story, sometimes we get the story of how an event transpired from every character’s perspective. This makes each episode fascinating and unique.

5. Deeper Characters

The show delves deeper into the life of each character paving way for much better character development. In HIMYM, you weep with Marshall when his dad dies, empathies with Robin when she finds out that she can’t have kids, feel sorry for Ted when he gets left at the altar and you cry with Barney when he confronts his real father about not being in his life when he was younger. My point is, there is more to each character than what meets the eye.
With F.R.I.E.N.D.S, the characters are unbearable and childish. And for the love of me, I will never figure out why people like Joey. Why???????

6. Invaluable Life Lessons

In case of HIMYM, the entire show is one big life lesson- start to finish. I have learnt so many things from Ted’s search for his “The One” over the years. With every heartache and despair, Ted taught me how to deal with my own problems. He’s made me the person I am today and for that reason alone, I rank this show way higher than F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

That’s life, you know, we never end up where you thought you wanted to be”- Marshall

There are a lot of little reasons why the big things in our lives happen” –Ted

"Because sometimes, even if you know how something's going to end, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the ride" - Ted

"The future is scary, but you can't just run back to the past because it's familiar. Yes, it's tempting, but it's a mistake" - Robin

"But that's the funny thing about destiny: it happens whether you plan it or not. It turns out I was just too close to the puzzle to see the picture that was forming" - Ted

"I'm cuddly, bitch"- Marshall

7. HIMYM describes Life

Many people were really bummed with how HIMYM ended when it first aired. Did I completely enjoy the way things were tied up in the end? NO. I don’t think the mother should have died. I don’t think Robin and Barney should have gotten divorced. I don’t think Ted and Robin deserve each other at all. But you know what? That’s life. Life doesn’t always go as planned and so didn’t the show. To quote one of my other favorite shows Crazy ExGirlfriend, “Life doesn’t make narrative sense”.
In real life, people just don’t get off the plane. And the sooner you learn this, the better.

All in all, I do admit that there are problems with HIMYM too but nonetheless, it will always be a better show than F.R.I.E.N.D.S for me. People always say “F.R.I.E.N.D.S is funnier no matter how many times you watch it” but that’s just because it’s so forgettable.

In contrast, what makes HIMYM remarkable is its link with the viewer through objects like Blue French Horn, Yellow Umbrella, Red Cowboy boots that certain someone totally pulls off and awesome (pun intended!) plot devices such as The Bro-Code, Hot-Crazy Scale, Cheerleader Effect, Robin Sparkles and her smash hit Let’s Go to the Mall, among a thousand others. These are the things that are completely unique to the show and imminently what makes it Legen-Waitforit-Dary ~Legendary~. Period.

Comments

  1. I too watched it as a kid. I rarely have the time to watch entire seasons these days. But every now and then, I like to watch compilations of HIMYM's best moments. The messages they give are so meaningful. I think about it, and realize that watching Ted's optimism and his perspective on love as I grew up have kept me hopeful, despite all the failings. I can't say the same for F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Watched 7 seasons and couldn't watch anymore. It was the forced laugh tracks that annoyed me most. Also, why are there dots after each letter? It's not even an acronym!

Just finished reading about 10 of your blog posts. Really enjoyed it.

  2. I never understood how friends rose to fame. Good for the series but I really hate when people say HIMYM is a copy of friends.
You explained it well sister 👏👏.
Will be going thorough your blog 😁

Sensations

PC: lovethispic.com He isn't cute. Cute doesn't even begin to describe half the person that he is. Cute is momentary, flimsy. And he is the furthest from flimsy as one can get. He is beautiful. His voice is beautiful, his laugh is beautiful and the way he looks at me, he makes me feel like I'm the most beautiful girl he's ever laid his eyes upon. He is a blazing flame. And I am but a mere moth. I'll get burnt, I know it. He doesn't promise me otherwise, either. Deciding it will be worth it has made all the difference. I could say I love him, but those three words can never justify the kaleidoscope of sensations I feel when I'm with him. He is all colors in one, at full brightness.

Love & Hate

PC: Elitedaily.com Silence woke her. As she laid on the floor, saliva drooping from her mouth, she realized it had gotten darker. She must have passed out for an hour or so. She sub-consciously touched her forehead. There was no blood this time but she knew it would bruise. The glass had hit her pretty hard, after all. Hits, Bruises and cover-ups were just another day in this household. As she got bearings of the time and place, she started to look around. Few yards away in the next room, she saw a heap of limbs passed out on the floor. Upon closer inspection, she could smell the concoction of alcohol, vomit and sweat. The view was jarring but she wasn't repulsed. The emotion that overcame her was pity. Pity at the man who was her husband. Pity at the man she once loved. As she looked back, she didn't know where exactly she she went wrong with her life. Born to a privileged family, she was smart and beautiful. No wonder, she had caught an athlete's eye. He was pre...

Blank Canvas

Clarissa stared at the blank Canvas. It was the umpteenth time she had tried drawing that day and every time she had failed miserably. Heaps of scrunched white paper laid beneath her feet but even so, she wasn't done with the assignment yet. Art class that afternoon had been immensely enlightening. "Art comes from you heart and not your head. It unfolds the mystery of your sub-conscious. You may pretend things to be otherwise, but always remember that a piece of art is the window to your soul. It never lies", he'd said. And She had nodded, to herself more than anyone else. At the end of the class he had told everyone to draw something that made them smile, without reason and in the most turbulent of times. The pencil she'd been holding fell from her grasp and she bounced back from her reverie. She brainstormed again and again. She picked up the pencil and thought of various ways it could go. What was the thing she lived for ? She thought of the place sh...

The Day I.....

My heart was still fluttering and it was only aggravating the situation further. It meant I still hadn't died, didn't it?  But Why ?  In the recent times, everybody has the day they’d die tattooed on their arm immediately after birth. It probably makes for a more sustainable living as people know their days are numbered so nobody does anything stupid at all. When someone is born, the medics check the Total Health Factor (THF) of the baby and calculate the day to which that person could live with no health-related obligations. People have THF ranging from 10 to even 35 years. People having THF lower than 10 are sent away, nobody except the government knows where. My THF is 16. And the date tattooed on my arm is 20th November 2311. Today. My providers had once told me about a time when death was uncertain. People lost the value of living because at one point everyone was just surviving for the sake of it. And the other major problem of that time was pe...

20 Things To Do Before 20

This post is a little different than the posts I usually do and it's "fun-er" than the rest of them too. I still have a year or two before I hit the twenties and that's where things get interesting. Teenage is probably going to be the most interesting part of our lives so I wanted to make a bucket list to make sure that this phase ceases in its full glory. So, this is my take on 20 things to do before 20 . Hope you enjoy going through it ! :) 20.  Bunking classes 19. Reading a good book and crying 18. Not studying for an exam but still acing it 17. Having a "love at first sight" moment 16. Watching a TV series until you get sick....literally 15. Trying a food you can't pronounce 14. Having at least 20 crushes 13. Talking to someone through the night till dawn 12. Going for shopping... alone! 11. Watching back-to-back movie at a cinema hall 10. Dating someone who isn't your type 9. Going to a dance party 8. Things and Places - I

Hello everyone, This month I've decided to do a series kind of thing. This is the first part of the story. And I'll be completing the story in the months to come. I might post something else in between but I'll definitely finish this one. Hope you like it :) Sameer She was browsing through the fiction section at a book store. She looked thoroughly engrossed yet was consciously glancing sideways. I suddenly looked away, embarrassed. As I glanced back at her general direction after a while, she was nervously taking out 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' from the shelf. I smiled. After that she disappeared once more  into the stacks and stacks of books. I picked up the book I was looking for and lazily made my way to the counter. Just when I handed over the money, she came along carrying 'The Great Gatsby', a Sidney Sheldon book  along with Harry Potter which was on the bottom of the bunch. Taking a cue from the universe about her meticulous timing...

Falling Out

This was in no way in my thinking, Never thought we would end up this way Even with all the hopes and promises of forever We slowly drifted away. Even though you think otherwise now, You had a special place in my heart, always. I don't think that can ever be filled up No one can ever take that place, no way! I might have said the wrong things, I might have always wanted my way I apologize for all of it, I don't want to end things the bitter way. No matter how things ended between us, I never wanted it in any way But I do hope that you remain happy, And realize that all I wanted was to see you that way. We had an unfortunate falling out, I don't know who is to blame, But, I will always love you I know you will do the same.

Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars

I have never done book reviews in my life except for those compulsory ones that I was made to do in 9th grade by my English teacher. He made us write five book reviews in a month (yes, you heard me right)..So yeah, the quantity ruled over quality and the whole "reviewing books" thing was an epic fail to sum it up.  And for a while, I have been running out of things to write about that interests me. So, I had an epiphany this evening about doing reviews. And I said to myself, what better book would there be to start with other than 'The Fault In our Stars' which is probably the most hyped Y/A  fiction of the 21st century, yet. In both good and bad ways. I don't remember the first time I heard about the book and that shouldn't surprise any of us as it basically ruled the internet since it came out. So, succumbing to the calls of pop culture, I finally decided to read the book in the fall of 2013. I'm aware that I might be a little  late. Here goes noth...

YOU & I

The sweet scent of summer had barely trickled into town. The trees were thawing, making way for color to seep back into the world. The sun dug into my eyes as I tried to take in the blueness of the sky. As my eyes started to tear up, I looked away and they fell on you. I didn't know you at all but as you made your way past me, I knew that that was what love looked like. You were beautiful. A tall, glorious vision I never wanted to forget. I wanted to encase you in a poem, to refrain you from ever leaving my mind, but you walked away before I could think of metaphors and similes. You didn't even look back. You just left. Too soon. The clouds greyed and the sky turned black. My heart was freezing and I desperately wished for the warmth of some one's arms around me. Much later, you told me how you liked people who could make their own fire. It was one of the things that I liked about you because it meant you didn't care how I wasn't looking for an...

Turning Time

PC: thereadingroom.com [Published as 'There and back again' on 'The Kathmandu Post' on 24th July, 2016] As he entered the strange world, the air immediately got crisper, cooler. The fact that he had expected it didn't change how it affected him every time. The hair down his spine stood straight and he grabbed onto his jacket a little tighter. He was already out of place with his pair of jeans and blue button-down. His only hope was that the jacket shielded him against the oddity. Being transported to the new timeline was always strange. And the fact that he was always transported to the same date, July 28, 1914 even stranger. As he shuffled out the alley, he knew exactly what to expect. Just like the other times, a woman came charging down the street with a kid. He always narrowly missed stumbling into them. So today, he made a point to take a pause before entering the street. He was learning, despite the fact that he didn’t know why or how he got sent to t...
