"Why did you decide to switch your field of study, from science to business?"
Ever since I made it official that I'll be pursuing business administration for my undergrad, this question has been all the more frequent. So frequent that this is all anyone ever asks me. And to be honest, I had been expecting this. In the 21st century, people change their career paths all the time. So, the surprise element for me is not what people ask, but why people ask.
People say 'World is a small place' all the time and there's a reason they say it. There's constant innovation in every field possible, every few seconds. The stakes are so high these days, that you can't just zone out for a few months and think that you'll catch up in no time. It's so hard to keep up that you have to keep your best foot forward all the time. To make it in today's world, only straight A's just don't cut it. You got to be more than just your mark sheet.
Having said that, It's not easy having an opinion like that in Nepal where people become Doctors, Engineers just for the sake of it, or more popularly, because their parents want them to be. It is so hard to follow your dreams in the society like ours that it's heartbreaking. 20 years down the lane, if you regret having a career chosen for you by others against your consent, who is to be deemed responsible?
So, contrary to popular beliefs, I didn't choose business because science got too hard for me or I did poorly on my exams because I didn't. It's because I am not interested in pursuing it as a career, as simple as that. I was fairly lucky regarding all this, because my parents were cool letting me decide what I wanted to do and I love them for this. Even though I always knew I'd get my degree on business, I deliberately chose science in my high school. It was partly because I wasn't ready for business at that point and I knew I could always switch later and partly because I wanted to be knowledgeable about more of everything. And In my books, the beauty of knowledge beats pretty much every other thing.
Life maybe short but it's pretty long when you want to do what you want to do. So who knows, after working for a few years in the business world, maybe I'll decide to spice up my life write a book or perhaps, after that I'll do something else. Or I might just stick to commerce my entire life. My point here is that possibilities are endless. If you stick to doing what you love, no work is an ordeal. I believe in doing what I love and loving what I do and for now, this is it. :)
